Hypothesis: An Architect’s Plot

Today, I found the contract linking Lord Bertin to Léonard Racle concerning the construction of the cast-iron bridge. In this document, the name of an architect appears. His name is Nicolas Aubry, and he was apparently removed from the project.

Transcription of Nicolas Aubry’s letter to the Department of Roads and Bridges:

“Gentlemen,

I am astonished by the decision taken by your honorable syndic to place at the head of such an ambitious project a man possessing neither the competence nor the qualifications in architecture. I am confident that you will reconsider your decision and take the necessary measures by appointing someone more qualified.”

Note: I do not believe that Nicolas Aubry harbored enough resentment toward Racle to wish him dead.
