Hypothesis: A Frustrated Architect
I have finally understood the concept behind Racle’s fireproof framework. It is a process that consists of replacing the wooden flooring and roof structure with a brick framework.
I found a transcription of an investigation report concerning the collapse of the grain hall (La Grenette).
This incident caused a great deal of public discussion, but Racle denied all responsibility in the matter.
Transcription of the investigation report on the collapse of the vault:
November 3–4, 1785
“Monsieur Léonard Racle claims to have warned the master builder, Alfred Martin, not to remove the centering too early in order to avoid any risk of collapse. However, the master builder is said to have ignored this recommendation, thus causing the collapse of the building and the death of one person.”
Note: The master builder Alfred Martin was ultimately convicted. I do not believe he was pleased with this outcome… There is a strong likelihood that he held a grudge against Racle.
