Hypothesis: A Thirst for Revenge

The college was a former hospital that was very frequently visited by workers from the faience factory.

The use of chemical products, as well as dangerous and poorly secured working conditions, led many workers to seek treatment there. Léonard Racle himself stayed there after falling ill.

While conducting further research on this place, I came across the journal of one of the hospital’s sisters.

Transcription of the journal of a hospital sister, Vivette:

“This morning, as was my habit, I rose around the fifth hour. With the other sisters, we went to pray. Then I made my way to the great hall to welcome the newcomers, expecting to find some poor sick or injured worker there. What a surprise it was when it was Monsieur Léonard Racle himself who appeared before me. It had been some time since I had last heard his name. The last time was when we learned that an artisan had taken his own life. It was said then that Monsieur Racle had stripped him of all he possessed, leaving him in great misery.”

[…]

“At midday, after the meal, I went to the chapel to pray with the other sisters. On the way, Canon Guichelet approached me with a troubled look. He revealed that he too had quarreled with Messire Racle. The canon told me that he had asked him to build a residence, but that since then many disturbing things have taken place there. He claims to hear sounds coming from nowhere, at hours when only angels and spirits keep watch. I dare not say it aloud, but I fear that this house is afflicted by some evil, or haunted by a restless soul. May God protect us from the evil one.”

Note: I do not understand what the canon means by “disturbing things.” What are these sounds he hears at night? And why does the canon seem to bear such resentment toward him?
